1 Custom Rat Rod on Wed May 04, 2016 9:45 am

Ok, so, I decided to start yet another build. This is a true Rat Rod, in the sense that I am putting together parts from several models and scratch building a lot of stuff.

I started out with a body I got from Wayne, (Kitbash). But, I had to modify it due to my clumsiness.

" />

This is the picture of the main body. I had broken the legs that kept the roof up, so, I knew I needed to do something different. I started with cutting the roof off. I started with the razor knife trick I see others do when they cut open doors, but this was to slow so I used my little saw.
[img][/img]
The first cut just wasn't where I wanted it, so, I again, took my saw and cut some more.
[img][/img]
This was my first attempt at making a custom floor, (Which you will see that I later chose not to do), but it did give me an idea of where things would sit.
[img][/img]
I didn't like how much room the body had, open, so, I took the roof and decided to close in the back half of the interior.
[img][/img]
This is the body with the floor and the covered interior. I used a new toy to attach the top to the body.
This is the BONDIC applicator. I love it. I put the compound on it, use the light it comes with and it is instantly hard enough to sand. It is great at attaching and filling in areas. It is also paint-able.
[img][/img]
I figured out where I wanted the floor to sit and cut out some styrene and created the back.
[img][/img]
I got some of my putty and did some filling, figure to sand it out in a couple of days.
[img][/img]
Here i am trying to figure out what I want the front to end in. I chose this grill/radiator combo, because I like the look it gives, I may angle it a bit, we'll see. I still have to choose axles, rims/tires, etc.
[img][/img]
I think this is the engine I am going with. I have no idea what it is, I got it from an old member before he left, so, I will ask him later to get that info. It looks as if I am going to have to do some more modifications to get it to work, though.

So, this is the Rat Rod. I am hoping to have it finished in the next few weeks. (This would be the first finished model I have done in over 20 years.)

looks like a great start bud

wont ask how ya ended up with a convertible out of a vicky body lol

saw those bondic glue thingies but never paid them much attention before ( might have to start now)

block looks like one of the old pro mods with the lenco style transmissions

3 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Thu May 05, 2016 7:51 am

I dropped the body, then proceeded to step on it, trying to pick it up. Guess I thought it was going to run away. Shocked

The Bondic glue is a little pricey to start, but, I have used it for other things than models. It is a great fix when you need strength and a quick adhesive. Smile

I am still toying with other engines, just wanted to see what this one would look like. I am not very happy with how long the tranny is, makes for a lot of work to the floor pan, which I was hoping to avoid. When you sent me this body, you sent over a Pontiac engine, I may see how that works out.

5 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Fri May 06, 2016 9:01 am

So, last night, I sanded down the putty mess and cut out the beam that is supposed to hold in the transmission. I also cut off the rear supports on the engine block so it would fit lower in the frame.

Of course, I didn't take any pictures, so, sorry about that.

I think I have figured out how to get the engine/transmission to sit without having to do any major work to the floor of the rat. I just need to figure out the axles, suspension and wheels now.

At least I am progressing.

I will try. No building this weekend, though, as we went camping. I will be posting my sons plane soon.

8 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Mon May 16, 2016 9:00 am

So, got some more done last night on the rat.

I found a great power master cylinder to add to the firewall and I added the firewall.

" />

Next, trimmed out a dash and got it in

" />

" />

Tried a mock up with the engine I first had, seems pretty nice, but, I am just not feeling it.

" />

Found this engine from a 65 GTO that I had in my junk box, never had all the parts to finish it, so, I figured it would do well as a donor kit.

" />

I set it and figured out how it should set, got the transmission mount put in. (remember, this is a true Rat Rod, not a custom hot rod, so, things are "engineered")

" />
" />

Added the front mounts, got the engine to sit exactly how I wanted.

" />

Mocked it up to see if I truly had everything sitting as I thought it should.

" />

Hand brushed some black on the body, figured a guy who is trying to make a fast car out of whatever he has around the garage, probably had a paintbrush and flat black paint.

" />

" />

So, that is where it is for now.

Big Jim got the idea that he needed a fast car. Now Jim is pretty good with cars and metal fabrication. He doesn't always finish every project he starts, but, he can get them to look ok and work great.

Jim looked at all of the metal and car stuff he has at his garage/field and decided he really likes the old body he found, but, it really needed some work, as the back seats were gone and the back portion of the body was rusted, the roof was caving in where the glass had be shattered and the front legs had been bent. He removed the roof and cut it down to make this 4 seater a 2 seater and found that he had an old Pontiac GTO that would never be good for anything but parts and saw that someone, at one time, had thrown a nice engine in it and so he took that and fabricated front mounts and a transmission mount so he could set it in. Now, Big Jim is on the lookout for the drive train he will use and some finishing touches. (He wants to take Betty Lou to the dance at the end of the month in it.)

Sounds good. Not sure when I will get back to this, the rest of this week is pretty tight, but, who knows.

I have to get back to my son's plane, also, so, that will cut into my time, but, it is fun seeing him enjoy it.

12 Coming to completion, but not yet on Mon Jun 20, 2016 8:53 am

Wow, could it be? Could I actually finish a model? This would be the first one since I joined this site whet it was the old site, actually, it would be the first in over 12 years. I'm so excited, I can actually see this one getting completed.

Well, here it is, what I have so far.

Got the front axle and steering assembly on, and then I painted over the chrome with an acrylic paint, from Walmart, called gunmetal. (I am falling in love with this paint) Took the fake shine away and made it look like it fit the project.

I had the body flat black, but chose to do the same gunmetal paint over the body. Going over the black, I think it came out looking very much like someone stripped the paint off to bare metal.

Played with the rims a bit, painted over the chrome with the gunmetal, then thought that painting the inner hubs black would make it look much better. I did this only to find that I put the hubs on backwards.

Did a quick mock up of the engine and the front grill. Put the wheels on. Something just doesn't seem right, but the fix comes later.

Decided to put some rust on the body, since, if you bring a body to bare metal and don't repaint, you will get surface rust. So, I added it, I think it came out pretty good.

So, I got the hubs straightened out and fixed, got a new distributor in the engine, as the one that was in it just didn't work.
This is my first attempt at wiring a model. At 1/24th, I am not worried about firing order. I think it came out pretty good.
Put the front grill/radiator on, trying to figure out how to finish it off. Had it on at an angle, but, that just wasn't working, so, I removed it and put it back on straight.
Got the seats, the shifter and the dash installed.

As you can see, I had to add some styrene rod to the inner hub of the wheel to make it all work. I added it to the rear first, just so I could get some clearance for the rear wheels, it seemed like a great way to get the front to follow the same. Just need to add disk brakes now.

This is a really nice close up. I just need the windshield installed, (That comes soon), and some little odds and ends.

There is the windshield. I have to finish it off, but, the frame is there.

You can see the patina and the wiring a bit better here. I still need to get headers on it, a front grill, headlights, tail lights, disk brakes, etc.

So, there is is, to date. Almost complete. Would love to get some additional things to put on it. Not in a hurry, but, I am excited to finish it.

15 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Wed Jun 22, 2016 4:50 pm

Well, I am getting there.

Got the headers modified, installed and painted.

[img][/img]

[img][/img]

Got a grill, modified it and got it put on. Later, I went over the chrome with gunmetal.

[img][/img]

Here is a shot after I got the painting finished

[img][/img]

So, as you can see, the headers and the grill got installed. I need to get headlights mounted, tail lights mounted and a driveshaft. I will get disk brakes as soon as they come in.

This could be done soon. I do need to figure uut what I can use for glass, in the windshield.

Wayne, I hope that you don't think anything in my posts has been in an effort to hurry you up, or anything like that. I am quite content in waiting. I am just trying to show that I am, for the first time, actually getting really close to finishing a model.

I am actually thinking of doing a 57 chevy nomad. Maybe just do some cool paint and call it done, that would be 2 models in a year, don't want to get crazy or anything.

Looking good Fletch!!
congrats on almost finishing one!!
maybe the '57 will go smooth now that you finished one.

I hope so, Rhodes, we'll see. I have always wanted to do a Nomad, so, that one is going to be special, this one, has been set down for the foreseeable future only because we have so much going on. I am ecstatic that I have gotten this far and cannot wait to finish and put it on display.

23 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Sat Jul 02, 2016 10:51 am

Post pics of the Nomad whenever you start on it. if I ever figure out how to post pictures I'll post some of my "REAPER" '55 Nomad Gasser that I've been working on.

So, I am going to incorporate my Rat into a diorama, so I can tell it's story. The rat may be finished soon, but, the complete model will not. Hoping to post some updates soon. Worked on plumbing, (Radiator Hoses) last night, but didn't finish.

25 Re: Custom Rat Rod on Thu Aug 25, 2016 12:48 pm

So, thanks to Kit's well timed package yesterday, I can move forward with this model to finish it up and also to the garage diorama, so I can incorporate it.

My only issue now is that I don't want to use the only set of disk brakes I have, LOL. Maybe I will just have to break down and get into making molded stuff. Very Happy
