Vinyl Tops My Way - Kitbash
Tue Jan 27, 2015 1:04 am
i see people use all different methods to make replica vinyl tops
i prefer the tried and true masking tape
i start by glueing 2 pieces of .005 styrene strip to the roof, these will turn into the seams of the top.
then i get the tape out
starting with the center section, taking my time to burnish everything down and get rid of all air bubbles
using a sharp #11 blade i trim the tape at the front window molding and on each side of the rails
i then do the same thing with the two side sections
both sides done and trimmed
2 coats of flat black , brushed on
time to do some trim work with the bare metal foil
foil goes on the same way as the tape..burnish and trim with a sharp blade
all foiled and ready for the clear coat, clear coat will act as both a sealer for the top so the edges dont lift and a glass enhancer for the finish of the vehicle. since i started with flat paint on the top and gloss on the body, it will improve the gloss on the car and give me a semi gloss look on the top.

Very nice.
I have seen blue tape loose its stickiness in the past, after a lot of time, have you run into this? Do you have a fix?

That's why I clear coat over it bud. Keeps the edges from lifting over time

I did the same thing when I did my vinyl top Wayne, but I used one piece of 4 inch wide Blue tape. I also polished the roof (Before putting the tape on) as if it was painted, a nice smooth surface should mean the tape stays stuck down, we'll see if I'm right or wrong in a few more years I guess!
